"I NEED to declutter." (Day 21 of 21)
Dear Reader, Have you heard the Walker Hayes country music song, "Fancy Like"? We laugh in this house, as my husband calls it "Mama's song.". I'm so not fancy. I eat leftovers, shop thrift stores for my clothes, make my kids wait impatiently at the grocery store while I "cut" digital coupons before checking out, and waited about ten years before I replaced my bath towels. I've never set foot into The Container Store, and it hurts me to pay full price for anything. When it comes to my precious earned dollars, I'm not too proud to save as many as possible. So when readers tell me, "I need to declutter, but I'm not sure The Big Declutter is right for me," I'm sending them a virtual high-five for asking questions to protect their dollars. "What the heck is The Big Declutter anyway? And why do you keep emailing me telling me I need it?" The Big Declutter is a labor of love. When I first decluttered our house, I was frustrated and overwhelmed. You literally couldn't walk in our garage or our basement. I had no idea where to start and how to start. So I started small. Sometimes, I worked on stuff in the wrong order (I'm still regretful I started with my kids' stuff and tried to with my husband's stuff before much of my own). The Big Declutter helps students avoid all the heartache I had when decluttering, and it tells students exactly where to start. Each week, students get decluttering tasks sent directly to them. If you were part of the recent Decluttering Habits Tracker Challenge, it was very similar to that, just a bit more in-depth. Each week, I not only tell students where to concentrate their efforts but how to go about it. I tell them what items to consider decluttering, how to prevent such clutter from coming back, and how to work through some of the emotions that are attached to that clutter. I give convo starters to help you work through the tasks with your family if you are trying to do this big decluttering thing with other people in the house. There's no more feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. "Is this focused mostly on those with kids?" No. Kid stuff needs sorting through. However, I am a firm believer that one must start with their own stuff. Many of the tasks can be adapted though. Shoes can be your shoes or our kids' shoes. Favorite things can be your crafts or your kids' toys. On these weeks, I give a bit of direction on how to adapt the tasks to your family. "Can I do this?" Yes, my friend, you can. Maybe you are battling recent surgeries, are acting as caretaker for not one, but two homes, or you are trying to downsize your home and are working on a tight timeline. Decluttering isn't easy when you are in the thick of it. However, it does create an easier home management system when you are done. That's when all the hard work pays off. Cleaning gets easier. Shopping gets easier. Life gets easier. You will have systems in place for mail, storing items, and cleaning up. The beauty of the program is it also encourages working in bite-sized pieces of time. Slow and steady, 15 minutes here, or maybe thirty minutes another day. You will get results. "What areas do you tell us to declutter?" I help you first declutter your stuff and items in shared spaces, like the entryway, kitchen, and bathroom. I do move from one room to the other sometimes. Why? Because spending weeks upon weeks in a room I hate is defeating and makes me want to quit. So maybe one week we look at your pots and pans and the next week, we clear the clutter from your media collection. The tasks are short and focused, so you won't be emptying out your entire closet or destroying a single room to finish the tasks. No one wants that. That can be scary! "How long does the program take?" You have options. You can purchase a 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month subscription. There are no recurring payments. (How many times have you signed up for something and forgot to cancel? Ugh.) For some, they want help just getting started, but they know in 3 months, they will learn the skills to keep moving forward on their own. For others, they have declared this year to be clutter-free, and they are committing to one year of getting it done with the 12-month option, no excuses. Pick what's right for you. 🎉 For those who sign up for the VIP 12-month program, I have a brand-new BONUS just for you: The Big Declutter Daily Habit Tracker and Planner! 🎉 Get a daily task planner designed specifically for this program. It is NOT date-specific. Instead, it has 365 daily decluttering tasks to help you work through the program. Get behind? No big deal. Start where you left off... or you can even skip around!
