How to put your home on auto-pilot (Day 19 of 21)
Hello Reader, Decluttering can put your home on auto-pilot. I know..l know. That seems too good to be true. I mean, how does getting rid of stuff really change that much? You still have to clean. Hear me out… Several years ago, it was nothing abnormal to grab the kids and head to Target on a beautiful sunny afternoon. I would place my sweet toddlers in the cart, and we would first swing by Starbucks. Then I would push them through the dollar section looking for a simple toy to keep them busy while mama shopped. Next, we would head to the clothing department to look for another cute top, all before I started to shop the end caps at the end of nearly every aisle. This is where they hide the really good deals. Before you know it, we would have all the things on my list PLUS a few “extra” items. No harm, right? I got a good some really great deals. Rinse and repeat. If I weren’t shopping in-store, I was sure to have a package arriving every few days from one of my favorite online retailers. Besides, I wasn’t buying the items on credit. We had the money. Heck, I even had the budget for this stuff! Why stress about buying more? The stress came once I got home. You see, there was absolutely nowhere else I could store yet another item in my home. My closets were FULL. The basement storage closet was FULL. The living room was FULL. My desk was BURIED under a mountain of papers. Managing our home became an impossible task I created for myself. I couldn’t keep a weekly cleaning schedule. Heck, I was lucky if the place got somewhat presentable before house guests stayed with us. Then, one New Year’s Day, I made a commitment to myself. I was going to simplify. I didn’t know what that looked like, or how I was going to do it. It started with a simple act, decluttering some clothes from my closet. That one simple act started a chain event of actions I would take to clear the excess from my home. Clearing the clutter from my home was almost addicting. If I didn’t get my ten-minute declutter session, I felt like I was missing something and unable to relax. I learned that with small, realistic actions, I could transform my home. No longer did I have clothes bursting at the seams of my closet. No longer were Rubbermaid containers stacked floor to ceiling in my basement. I gained whole rooms back! My kids were actually playing in their rooms AND cleaning up after themselves. It was magical. The magic that happened in my home is why I am so passionate about teaching others to declutter and simplify. I know the power of creating SPACE in the home. When you aren’t spending all your time moving piles from one spot to another, you have room and time to do all the other stuff you’ve been missing out on. You can sit down to binge-watch Netflix without feeling guilty. You can play a game with your kids. You can finally finish that book or that craft project. It’s crazy how your home magically turns to auto-pilot when there’s no longer excess to deal with anymore. Most of us delay decluttering because the thought of starting is absolutely overwhelming. 👉Where do you start? 👉 How do you start? 👉 What about all those crazy emotions that make it feel impossible? 🤩 That’s where The Big Declutter comes in.
